Richard is project leader for the SMGS. A degree in archaeology led to several happy years as a field archaeologist in various parts of England, and a spell as an assistant curator at the Roman Baths Museum in Bath. He still wonders why he left the archaeology world to take up a ‘normal’ job, but at least SMGS has given some focus to his passion for pottering around old churches.
John became interested in European historical demography during his civil service career and on retirement extended this by studying for a diploma in local history and, in 2000, obtained a BA Combined Studies degree in History and the History of Ideas at the University of Surrey. He has always been interested in church history and he edits and produces a guide to the twelfth century church at Newdigate Surrey.
